Full Description

Roman road traced on aerial photographs. The stretch between TL 942235 and 940231 and TL 916206 to 920211 are conjectural and do not show on the APs. The stretch between TL 940231 and 935225 is still preserved as a road or trackway as is the stretch between TL 923214 and 920211. According to Mrs McMaster this `road' from Stanway to Messing is not a Roman road but the line of a water pipe laid some 50 years ago - "the occupier of Hoggetts Farm (920209) says she gets her water off a branch of it". NMR photos confirm Mrs McMasters view. The pipe can be seen crossing Roman River at TL 937228; the cropmark is parched and not wide enough for a road. However there are still the two stretches of trackway surviving on this alignment. <1> Aerofilms Survey 20, 6:1960 run 15 photo 088 shows a clear cropmark running from TL 935225 to 926216. This line projects south-west from the course of the track running from Bellhouse Farm and ends at the point where it joins the course of the Roman road running from north of Kelvedon to Colchester via Gosbecks. Presumably a ploughed out Roman road. There is a pottery scatter nearby at TL 932231.<2><3> APs in EHER.<4><5><6> Continuation of this Roman road appears on RAF vertical photography from 1954. A short stretch appears on TL92NE at TL954231, though it has been subsequently destroyed by development.<7><8><9><10>
The stretch of pipeline to the south of Church Lane, Stanway, is shown as a cropmark on Google Earth in 2005.<12> It also shows up on LIDAR.
