Full Description

Tumulus excavated by the Morant Club in 1910. It was apparently completely robbed, probably in Roman times. It may have been the burial of a Belgic chieftain as the tumulus nearby (Lexden Tumulus, site 11711) proved to be. <1> No burial was found here although the trench was taken to a depth of 17 feet. Only a few fragments of Roman tile and pottery were found. Hawkes interpreted the site as an Iron Age barrow being within the cemetery of that period (site 11714). <2> <5> <6> Photos of the mount in the SMR. <4> Photo <3>
