Full Description

Aerial photograohs of the area of a planned quarry showed two major features threatened, a sub-rectangular enclosure saved at the instigation of J Hedges, and a ditch which was excavated. The ditch ran approximately north-east across the field. It was U-shaped in section varying from 1-1.2m in depth below the level of the natural gravel. Indications suggest that any bank associated with the ditch lay on its north-west side. At the butt (NE) end the ditch turned slightly to the north and ended in a semi-circular shelving terminal. There were no finds from the ditch apart from a very small sherd of coarse flint gritted pottery from the final silts of one trench. Therefore the dating and interpretation depends on its relationship with other features. The initial idea that it was the termination of Grymes Dyke is now discounted but the ditch does not seem to be earlier than the dyke. No sign of western continuation of the ditch beyond the dyke appears on the APs. The ditch is approximately contemporary with or later than the dyke itself dated to the first half of the C1 AD. The ditch represents part of a larger enclosure using the dyke to the west, and the River Colne to the north, The enclosures are presumed to be for stock. <1> Ditch plotted on cropmark plot. <2> Other ref. <3> AP in SMR. <4>

Various linear features were recorded on photography from 2014 <5>
