Full Description

Scatter of Roman pottery found during fieldwalking. Possibly associated with TL91-106, 11573-6. <1> <2> A small amount of fragmentary and abraded pottery of Belgic and Roman date. The Roman pottery covers a wide date range from the C1 or C2 AD to the C4. Imported pottery consists of five samian sherds and amphorae fragments in four different fabrics, including a rim derived from a southern Spanish amphora Dressel 20. Fine wares from major British production centres include a cornice rim sherd from a Colchester colour coated beaker, a footring from an Oxford oxidised ware mortarium of the late C3 or C4, and two colour coated sherds which are probably Nene valley wares. The coarse wares are derived from beaded, everted and ledged rim jars and bowls none of which are closely dateable. There are also a few fragments of tile, including two from box flue tiles and one from imbrex and tegulae. Part of a puddingstone quern may also be Roman in date. The fairly large quantity of Roman material suggests the presence of an occupation site, perhaps a small agricultural settlement within or near Barn Field. <3> <4>
