Summary

Moated enclosure fronting the (north) west side of Layer Breton Heath. Moat with entrance on east side (onto the Heath), c.0.36ha. In area. Encloses Stamp and Crows Farmhouse (MCC7313), which is dated from the 16th century (NHLE 1223801).

Full Description

Moat. <1> Homestead moat. <2>

Formerly isolated manorial moat; complete and rectangular without enclosure banks. The moat is c.4m wide and 2.5m deep, intact and well maintained. It surrounds a house of 1550. Sketch plan on back of MSRG card <3><4> Shown on map of 1767.<5> in <3>

Probably to be associated with the family of Henry Stampe, 1451.<6> The Oscard gives the date of the house as the early C15.<7>

Site Assessment = Filled with water, very good condition. <1> Most intact and well maintained, cattle pond within moated area. <3>
