Full Description

Roman pottery found at Birch Castle.<1>
"Morant, having observed that `Sir William Gernon had a castle here' preferred to regard the earthwork as one of the Lexden earthworks. Jenkins thought that the earthwork was quadrangular and therefore Roman, and added `near it passed the Roman way and near it too formerly stood a tumulus within which several Roman urns were found, evidently the burial place of soldiers belonging to the fort'". However no Roman road has been identified here and "when so much is uncritical it becomes a question whether there was in fact a tumulus with urns".<2><3> in <2>
