Full Description

Entry in Wire's diary, 11.11.1849, records an arch in the cellar of the last house but one on the E side of Maidenburgh Street; built of Roman bricks each 6" square, cemented by mortar containing pounded brick and tile (Wire thought the bricks Saxon due to their size). Above the arch the wall is built of Roman brick but no pounded brick in the mortar. The cellar of the next house has an arch of modern date - Wire suggested the former arch to be remains of a Roman sewer. Wheeler and Laver recognized the work as entirely Roman and add "the wall and arch are buried below the springing of the latter, but the wall is still visible to a height of 6ft and a similar breadth from E to W. The work is good and probably not later than the C2". The arch, of one ring of imperfect tiles, is too wide for that of a sewer and openings in the walls at East Gate and Schere Gate have double rings of tiles "so that it hardly has dignity enough to belong to a possible Roman Rye Gate. Its distance back from the town walls must be at least 30ft. <1> <2> Other refs. <3> <4>
