Full Description

Mount Bures is a Domesday Manor held by Wulfomer before the Conquest, by Roger of Poitou afterwards. There was a mill here before and after the Conquest. After the Conquest, some land was also held by Roger of Raismes.<1>

An earthwork trial-trenched in 1972 may be a mill dam, but no dating evidence was found (see 0000). "The Lexden Hundred Saxon manor of Bures is firmly established as that general territory of Mount Bures parish." Presumably the siting of the Norman church and motte are indicative of the siting of the Saxon settlement.<2>
