Full Description

Remains of a moat at site of Great Tey Manor House. House burnt down many years before 1768. Not rebuilt, but a new barn was built near it. Moats around house were levelled and ploughed out in C18. Larger pond shown on 1: 25000 OS map, which may have been an arm of a moat, recently (Summer 1976) filled in but for a small portion to the E. From what was the W end of the pond there is a depression running N for 20m, suggesting an enclosure on that side. At TL 88842630 land is slightly raised and may have been the site of the house but no evidence of this can be seen on the ground. <1> <2> <3>
