Cropmarks: trackway or road, double-ditched on either side, line of Roman road? <1> - <5> Cropmark is continued by road line down to Stane Street (A120).
Between Oct 1990 and July 1991 the Colchester Archaeological Group excavated a section across the line of the cropmark in order to confirm that it was a Roman road. <6>
The excavations continued in 1998 when another road surface (made later) was discovered in a more westerly location, interpreted as a deviation. Unlike the original the replacement appears to be a simple trench road.

The cropmark of a sub-square enclosure (TL 89012467) was investigated by Colchester Archaeological Group in 2005, by geophysical survey followed by the excavation of two trial trenches. The V-shaped ditch was of similar dimensions in both trenches, c.2.2m wide x 1.3m deep, below c.0.6m of topsoil and subsoil. The lower fill of the ditch contained LBA/EIA flint-tempered pottery through to MIA sand-tempered pottery. LIA pottery was recovered from higher up in the ditch fill.<10>
