Full Description

A rectangular kiln enclosure of 2nd century date defined by a retaining wall of which only slight footings remained when excavated. This consisted of small irregular pieces of Kentish ragstone, laid in a poorish mortar, and about 18' wide. The wall had been (apparently) continuous on all sides except the north, where it was interrupted by the clay face of the sigillata kiln. The space enclosed by the wall was irregular, measuring 19ft wide on the south, 18ft on the west, 17ft on the east and nearly 20ft on the north. Within this space four kilns had operated - No's 19 <MCC649>, 22 <MCC652>, 20 <MCC650>, 21 <MCC651>.<1><2>
