Full Description

During excavations at Balkerne Lane between 1973-6 (ECC332) a Roman timber-lined drain was discovered situated along the south side of the main Colchester to London street (MCC475). The drain was detected at four locations where faint traces of decayed wood were found but no nails. The drain was 0.6m across and 0.3m deep. It was laid out to pass within 0.2m of the foot of the north wall of a strip-house (MCC589). The drain was succeeded by a second more complicated phase of drainage (see MCC632, MCC633, MCC634).<1>
