Full Description
During excavations at Balkerne Lane between 1973-6 (ECC332), a possible water-tank (CAT feature GF61) was discovered which consisted of a shallow pit lined on the sides and bottom with clay. Inside the lining the tank was 3.2m x 2.0m and 0.45m deep. A shallow slot around the base indicated that there may have been a timber-frame inside the lining. The pit lay on the south side of the main Colchester to London road (MCC475) and may have been associated with one of the properties which lined the street. The pit was probably for animals.<1>
