Full Description
During excavations at Balkerne Lane between 1973-6 (ECC332), a Roman street was found running east-west across the lower part of the site. The street sealed some earlier remains including possible ovens and pits belonging to one or more buildings which pre-dated the street (see MCC606).
The gravelled street had been laid down sometime during the late 1st century to early second century AD and was resurfaced several times with the latest surviving metalling being of 2nd-century date. The total thickness of metalling was 0.7m and the road appeared to be no more than 5.0m wide. The street had a ditch along its north side.
Some east-west wheel ruts cut into the earliest metalled surface and several small pits and slots were found to have been cut into the street, probably after it had gone out of use (see MCC473). Two ditches (MCC622 and MCC623) to the south-west and north of the street metalling, may have indicated the position and alignment (s) of the street where its metalling had been lost.<1>
