Full Description

A Roman Road with drainage ditch, overlying the route of the pre-conquest track way at Sheepen. Designated as Road II in Sheepen Report. The ditch was 18"-21" deep and 3-4ft wide, with steep cut sides and a flat or hollowed bottom 12-18" across. The ditch appears to have been dug first and the upcast used to form the Road.<1>

Excavations at Sheepen in 1970 (ECC488) uncovered the Roman road at six different locations. The road was found to seal the earlier Iron Age trackway (MCC598), which was overlain by a sandy levelling layer on which the fine gravel road metalling was rammed. The surface showed distinct signs of wear and at one place had been encroached upon leaving a layer of charcoal containing numerous bronze droplets, scorching the road surface itself. Contemporary with the road was a large central drainage ditch. A secondary surfacing indicated the presence of a later road overlying this one (see MCC1382).<2>
