Full Description

During excavations at Balkerne Lane between 1973-6 (ECC332) the remains of one or more buildings (CAT Building 61) were discovered to the south of two other buildings, MCC547 and MCC517.

Only the lowest parts of the building (s) survived due to erosion caused by late Roman cultivation of the site (MCC473). The surviving features included many stake holes, several small pits, an oblong pit or gully and six ovens or hearths.

The building (s) had been orientated east-west and were probably strip-houses which fronted onto a north-south street to the east and because of the positions of the Legionary fortress ditch (MCC478) and later colonia ditch (MCC539), they could only have belonged to the periods immediately after the abandonment of the former or after the backfilling of the latter. The remains of a baby (MCC732) lay in a layer of make-up associated with the site.<1>
