Full Description

During excavations at Balkerne Lane in 1973-6, a Roman building was discovered which, from the surviving remains, appears to have been a workshop of three phases. The area of the building had been badly damaged by modern terracing so that all the floor levels and the foundations at its east end had been destroyed.

The walls of the building were of mortared septaria on a shallow foundation of sand and small stones and the building measured about 6.1m across. The first phase of the workshop was associated with a double-chambered oven measuring about 2.2m x 1.4m. A shallow raking out pit and two other small pits were associated with this phase. Outside the buildings north wall were two deep pits.

During its second phase the double-chambered oven was demolished and replaced by a hearth or oven. The buildings final phase was linked to the demolition of the hearth/oven and continued occupation. Outside the north wall a storage jar had been utilised as an oven. No structures can be linked with this phase.<1>
