Full Description

Essex County Council Field Archaeology Unit was commissioned by Essex County Council Highways and Transportation Services to identify the remains of a former boundary alongside a property known as ‘Heatherwick’, Inworth Lane, Wakes Colne. The investigation was designed to locate the position of a field ditch that was filled in the 1970s. Footpath 5 is known to run parallel to the western edge of this boundary, although its exact position is currently in dispute. Four trenches were hand-dug within the western boundary of Heatherwick. The remains of the backfilled ditch were identified in three. The position of the original boundary has been extrapolated in combination with the information on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of c. 1897. Evidence of root disturbance from a hedge line was also recorded in the southern-most trenches and it is believed that this corresponds to a hedge-line that once ran to the immediate west of the disputed footpath. No trace of the footpath itself was recorded during the investigation.
