Full Description

16 August 1648 Parliamentarian troops start the construction of a line of fortifications around the walled town and its suburbs.<1>
Rarliamentarians construct a ring of forts around the walled town. The forts on the south and west sides were joined by a contiuous trench three miles long to block escape routes. The southern route is difficult to define as no extant sections survive<2>
Trial trenching on area E of the garrison revealed a Post-medieval ditch interpreted as possibly being part of the remains of the 1648 seigeworks.<3>
