Full Description
During excavations at Balkerne Lane in 1973-6 (ECC332) a Roman building (CAT Building 47) dated to between AD 60/61 and c.AD 150. The recorded remains could represent the remnants of up to three strip-houses and little is understood about the plan except that the building (s) extended at least 18m back from the frontage onto the street (MCC475). Unfortunately most of the layers associated with the building (s) were removed by machine.
The walls were constructed of daub resting on ground plates. One room could be clearly defined by two daub walls standing to a height of a few centimetres together with a slot left after the removal of the ground plate during demolition of the building (s). Floors were also constructed of daub and where exposed were found to be burnt. One example of an alternative flooring type was found further to the south where a series of decayed wooden floor joists survived after having subsided into the upper part of the boundary ditch (MCC541). These floor joists suggest that the building (s) extended this far back from the street frontage although most of the area they would have covered was destroyed by late Roman sand quarrying (see MCC473).
At least one oven of a group of four (see also MCC473) was found to belong to the building (s), and the remains of a baby burial (MCC591) lay near the street frontage.
