Full Description

During excavations at Balkerne Lane in 1973-6 (ECC332) a Roman timber-lined water main dated to the early years of the Colonia was discovered. The water main was recovered in two sections along the southern edge of the main road (MCC475) and was the deepest and earliest of a group of mains which followed the same course. The main consisted of straight wooden pipes connected by flat iron collar and may have supplied water to one of the buildings fronting onto the southern edge of the street (see MCC493, MCC494, MCC495). Its context however, is uncertain.<1>
