Full Description

Brick Kiln on south side of and at the end of Coopers Lane. <1> It was south, south west of the above brick works in Coopers Lane.

Date: c1870's.

Operator: Baker(?) or Wengrove (?)

Products: Red bricks.

Site Assessment:
At the end of Coopers Lane on the south side are two long single storey red brick cottages and pan tiled rofs. The cottage at the western end is called 'South Hills' and immediately to its east is 'South Hills Cottage'. Just behind and south of 'South Hills' is a garage of no aparent interest and immediately behind and south of this garage are the substantial remains of a red brick circular or rectangular kiln. It is probably an updraught kiln, but is almost completely covered with undergrowth, particularly ivy. Further investigation is strongly recommended to determine type, dimensions and other features of this surviving kiln.

C19 standing structures at Essex brickworks are extremely rare and this structure should be recorded at the earliest opportunity. Desk top analysis and walkover to determine location and potential significance of below ground remains.
