Full Description

East Donyland Brickworks <1> were located on the north west bank of the Roman River, south of Rowhedge.

Rowhedge was a village within the parish of East Donyland. In c1770's there was a brick kiln near The Hay, south of Manwood Bridge over the Roman River, south of East Donyland and west of Fingringhoe. (Ref: Chapman and André map of Essex, 1777).

Dates: c1860's to at least 1884.

Operator: Arthur Solomon Went (known as Sololmon Went).

Products: Bricks, pipes, tiles and pottery.

Further Information:
In 1873 Solomon Went owned 3 acres of land in East Donyland. He operated the two extensive East Donyland Brick works in the Rowhedge part of the parish. His kiln fired products were mainly dispatched by water along the Roman River and then the River Colne. In 1880 he opened up another brickworks at Great Bentley (see under Great Bentley for further details).

Site Assessment:
Undeveloped with potentially important archaeological remains. Walk over and desk based assessment with further intrusive works if warranted.
