Full Description

Contemporary records state, "Pillbox. Allotments opposite "Leather Bottle" at junction of Maldon and Gosbecks Roads. Map ref. 418415" (Mil. Ed.) <1> One of a pair guarding the road junction and approach into Colchester (see SMR 20532/MCC5325), this pillbox stood close to the E side of Shrub End Road, 25 yards from its junction with Gosbecks Road. It can be clearly seen on an aerial photograph taken in March 1945 - hexagonal (probably an FW3/22 type), with its entrance on the NW face. From this position it would have had a field of fire to the E (across the allotments) and the NE.<2>

This position is now Shrub End Social Centre.
