Full Description

According to the two plaques either side of the door on the north elevation the foundation stone of this tower was laid on 24th September 1901 and it was built for Wivenhoe District Council Waterworks. Built in red brick it has a blue brick plinth and a stone string course at cill level of the first-floor windows. Built in campanile style the iron tank is painted red oxide colour and has a copper pavilion roof surmounted by a wooden turret. This latter is louvered and glazed and itself has a copper covered pavilion roof with a weathervane on the apex. Elevations are in Romanesque style and the opposite elevations are similar. The north and south elevations have doors and windows in each of the three bays and at each of the upper two floors. The other two elevations have no doors and only one window in the third level. The arches forming the bays in each elevation are topped with stone arches with keystones. The main door, in the north façade, has a stone surround and half-round stone arch which springs from two Corinthian columns. The site also contains a large iron tank at ground level. <1>.
