Full Description

Extensive brewery and maltings complex originally owned by Daniels Brewery and latterly operated by Truman’s. The malthouse is two-storey, 12 bays, gable ends and slate roof; subsequent conversion to offices has resulted in the loss of any internal technological features and the kiln. Erroneously assessed in the list description as eighteenth century, the site almost certainly dates from the late-nineteenth century. <1>.

Thomas Daniell was brewing on farms adjacent to this site before the mid 19th century and the brewery seems to have developed from there throughout the second half of the 19th century. In 1889 Scamell and Colyer, brewers’ architects, were responsible for additions. This developed, therefore, into an extensive brewery complex with house, brewhouse, bottling plant, malthouse, stables and a chimney indicating heating and/or power. It remained in the Daniell family under various names and was Daniell and Sons Breweries Ltd when taken over by Truman, Hanbury and Buxton and Co. Ltd. in 1958. Brewing ceased in 1959, the site then being a regional office and depot until 1986. Demolition of some of the complex was followed by conversion of the remainder into residential units. The malthouse remains and was assessed as part of the malthouse survey (EHCR No 15294). An extensive multi-storey range also remains, of red brick under a slate roof and with such traditional brewery features as weather-boarding, louvred lanterns, lucams and the name ‘TRUMAN’ in large letters on the south east side. How much these features represent the original features is difficult to assess as all are newly refurbished. <2>.
