Full Description

An aerial photograph taken in 1946 shows what may be a pillbox on the S side of New Road. Although it is very indistinct, this is a totally logical position overlooking the road barrier and anti-tank ditch approx. 40 yards to the NE.<1>

Contemporary records state,"A/T ditch and 6 pillboxes. Hill and Cummins Farms, Aldham, O.S. Nos. 50, 51, 64, 68, 69, 44, 42." This was field O.S. No. 64.<2>

Each of the bridges across the R. Colne Eastern Command Line appears to have been covered by an FW3/28 artillery pillbox during WWII. Although not facing the road barrier (SMR 10978/MCC5118) – it faces NNE across the ditch a long straight edge which is visible on the aerial photograph suggests that this may have been an FW3/28.
