Full Description

This is the site of a 1935 reinforced concrete water tower, more slender in construction than many of the other concrete towers in the County. The circular tank is supported on a circular central core and eight slender columns which are tied back to the central core by ties and struts. There are two ring beams tying the columns together at intermediate stages and also at tank soffit level. The central core has no windows and one wooden door. <1>

ARCHAEOLOGICAL POTENTIAL:
The absence of modern additions/alterations suggests that much of the towers internal spatial/technological configuration survives. <1>

SITE SIGNIFICANCE:
One of twelve concrete water towers that were examined during the survey. Although these all adopt a similar form there are many different variations in style and as a group they proved difficult to assess. It is hoped that further guidance will be produced as a result of the national survey, but until this is submitted three Essex examples have been provisionally selected for statutory protection (SMR Nos. 15607, 15612 and 15615). The Abberton water tower is of insufficient interest to warrant listing. <1>

SITE MANAGEMENT:
This tower is still in use by the water industry and is well maintained. Prior to any future development/conversion a record of the tower should be undertaken, but the level will be dependent on the existence of original engineering drawings. <1>
