Full Description

Site of the 1808 waterworks established following the Act of Parliament of that year, located at the base of the Balkerne Hill (just outside the NW corner of the walled town).

Originally the site consisted of the works, the superintendent’s house and a reservoir plus warm and cold baths, the former heated by the steam from the engine. In 1851 the company sold the undertaking to Peter Bruff and others who sank an artesian well worked by a 24 h.p. steam engine. In 1880 the Corporation took over the undertaking and began major improvements. In 1893/4 the extant pump house and associated workshops were built, by J. Mackworth Wood, in a Roman Italianate style sympathetic to the Jumbo water tower (see MCC3211) which it served. The red brick pump house is of two-storeys with a pyramidal slated roof with a terracotta frieze. Windows and doors have round arches in rubbed bricks and moulded extrados. There is a projecting decorative band under the eaves and beneath the first-floor windows and a moulded plinth. Of the metal windows, the only originals appear to be on the ground-floor. There is an attached former workshop of single-storey in red brick and with a pitched slated roof. There is also a less elaborate, separate workshop on the site of the same age as the pump house and constructed in the same materials. Converted to offices in 1988. Modern development has taken place on the rest of the site including the area of the reservoir - Rowan House, Borough Council offices, erected in 1985. The eastern part of the site, including several buildings, was removed for the construction of the Balkerne Hill dual-carriageway in the 1970s.<1>
