Full Description

Red brick built three-storey maltings with slate roofs and four pyramidal kilns. Two single-storey storage blocks fronted the road with a central entrance and behind each block stood the drying floors. Internally the floors were supported on three rows of cast iron columns, the kilns had metal floors and the west end was held together by wrought iron ties. The building had a datestone with the inscription ‘S.S. 1853’. Listed Grade II in 1968, the buildings were demolished in 1976. This was a good example of a mid-19th century urban malting retaining important technological information (in situ kiln furniture, louvred wooden windows and the internal structural frame).<1>
