Full Description

Existence of a site was indicated by various metal finds, mostly recovered by local detectorist, Mr Ken Harvey.
I Was shown metal finds, entirely bronze, including 30 to 40 coins, of 1st to 4th century date. There were also at least 5 bow brooches, in various stages of completeness, a plain finger ring, part of a finger ring with an oval (empty) bezel, part of a plain bracelet, some lengths of wire and 2 small lion- headed terminals, c. 1cm across.
Pottery finds included central Gaulish samian, spanish amphora fragments, a piece of mortarium rim, fine wares ( one from barbotine decoration) and sandy grey wares (Identified by Scott Martin). There was also a little R/B and post- medieval pot and tile, plus a few sherds of medieval and post- medieval pottery (Identified by Hilary Majorand Helen Walker).
Walking over the site (which had a cereal crop a few inches high) with Mr Ian Stratford of Lane Farm revealed that the finds all came from a fllatish area at the edge of a steep drop to the West down to Pardon Brook. Although now well drained, the area of the Brook was formerly Marshland with reed beds. No metal finds had been made from the valley bottom or the slope.
Metal Finds outnumbered ceramic finds, but it is possible that this inbalance may have been due to the fact that neither Mr Harvey nor Mr Stratford found it easy to recognise pottery, except in very large sherds. <1>
