Full Description
Built in 1924 this water tower is in the campanile style with the tower in multi-colour bricks with a blue brick plinth. The iron tank is painted red oxide colour having a copper-covered pavilion roof with a wooden turret, itself having a copper covered pavilion roof with weathervane on the apex. Elevations are symmetrical except for the addition of a door in the east and west elevations. Window openings have all been bricked in and have half-round gauged arches in rubbed bricks. At the tank level are now a number of antennae used in the modern communications industry.
The absence of modern additions/alterations suggests that much of the towers internal spatial/technological configuration survives.
One of five campanile style water towers identified during the survey (SMR Nos. 15600-15602 and 15604). These are all built to a high architectural standard; one is listed Grade II, the two earlier examples have been recommended for statutory protection and the remaining two should be retained as locally important structures. Should the national survey find that these towers are comparatively rare this example may merit listing.
Still in use by the Water Company and well maintained, the tower has also been utilised as radio mast. Every effort should be made to preserve this locally important structure and a record should be undertaken prior to any future development/conversion; the level will be dependent on the existence of original engineering drawings.<1>
