Full Description

The medieval archery ground was sited beside the corner of Brook Street. Although uits earliest mention is in a rental dating to the reign of Elizabeth 1, it is thought to be medieval in origin. It measures 180 by 25 yards, by Henry VIII the size of an archery butts was 220 yards, so presumably pre-dates this. Was rented in 1617-40 by the Vicar and the Headmaster for the Grammar School before passing into private hands. <1>
