Full Description

RCHME survey of 37 High Street. House and shops, completely rebuilt except cellar which is of the 14th century. In a rubble wall to the south of the street frontage is an original doorway, with chamfered jambs, two centred arch and square-moulded label; East of the doorway is a square-moulded bracket and west of it is a fireplace, probably of the 16th century. Above the modern lintel there is a square vent-hole.<1> Much of medieval cellar walls are obscured by later work. The absence of peg-tile suggests that the cellar may be early medieval.<2>

Two panels of "wattle and daub" walling with stencilled decoration from 37 High Street. COLEM 1925 5047.<3>
