Full Description

The Old Crown Public House was built in 1798 on the busy coaching route to London. Charles Thomas Thorn was brewing here in 1839 and in 1886 was listed as a family ale and porter brewer. In the previous year (1885) an earthquake demolished the front of the building and which was rebuilt - a monogram and date on this front facade testifying to this date. The business changed hands three times in the late 19th and early 20th century, brewing here probably ceasing in the late 19th century when the public house was sold to the Tiptree Heath Brewery. A timber-framed building under a slate roof, there remain a number of outhouses of similar construction but under tiled roofs, which may have been associated with the brewing. A malthouse existed close by which is extant and was assessed as part of the Essex County Council Malthouse Survey (EHCR No 15021). <1>.
