Full Description

18th century brick-built single-storey cottage with attic storey and modern casements. A clay tile clad malt kiln projects from the roof of the building; this tapers upwards and the top is closed. The cottages to the northeast may have housed the steep and drying floors, but the kiln may have been associated with an oast house.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL POTENTIAL: The building retains few original features, but the wooden frame supporting the kiln probably survives.
SITE SIGNIFICANCE: Kilns of this form are now rare in Essex and the structure forms an important local landscape feature.
MANAGEMENT: Sound structural condition. Any opportunity to inspect the internal framework of the kiln should be taken and a measured record should be made if it is of sufficient importance and threatened. Otherwise record photographically, RCHME Level 2. <1>.
