Full Description

Developed by the South Essex Waterworks Co. in the late 1930s, this site consists of a boiler house and pumping hall built in the International Modern style, filter-beds, covered service reservoirs and on the southern perimeter of the site the ‘Essex Water Company Estate’. Waterworks Close includes No. 1, a detached house of red brick under a tiled roof; Essex House, a detached brick house under a slate roof (perhaps more recent than the others); and 2 – 13, six pairs of semi-detached houses of red brick under hipped, tiled roofs. The detail of the houses varies such that some have bay windows to the ground floor, some to both floors with hung tiles between and others with no bays at all. Some have arched windows in the side elevations and some recessed porches. (‘The Buntings’ are more recently built flats.) <1>
