Full Description

Timber-framed farmhouse.<1>

A heritage assessment by Leigh Alston in 2018 states that the building dates in part from the late 14th or early 15th century (although listed as 16th century). 'The building is of special historic interest as it retains evidence of a major fire that destroyed its original parlour cross-wing in the early 17th century. Prior to the mid 20th century the well documented site was known as Thurgoods after its 14th century owner Edmund Thurgor, with references to ‘Thorgoreslande’ in 1441 and ‘Thurgores’ in 1573. The house was described as a ‘five bayed house’ in a survey of 1606 but has since lost its service bay and now contains only four.' The house was extensively renovated in the Mock Tudor or Mock Gothic taste at some point in the mid 20th century when its external timbers were exposed and partly renewed.<2>
