Full Description

Two watermills have been recorded for the Hythe. The earliest of these, Sebares mill, was documented in 1332 but its location cannot be ascertained with any degree of accuracy.<1> The second mill, known as Hythe Mill, was on the west bank of the Colne just above Hythe Bridge and was built by the Borough before 1385. It went through various structural and functional changes including phases of dereliction and rebuilding by 1489 and 1548, a mill house was added at the end of the 16th century/ early 17th century. The mill house had been removed by 1703 and the mill underwent further extensive repairs in 1705-6. it was finally demolished before 1736 because it was obstructing navigation.<2>
