Full Description

A 2b (second brass) of Trajan, Britannia on the reverse found at Hythe Lock and brought by Mr. Samuel S. Brown to William Wire on 25th October 1847, for examination.<1> As no coins of Trajan are known to have Britannia on the reverse, it seems more likely that this was a dupondius of Hadrian minted between AD 119 and AD 138. Wire may have mistaken the name, Traianvs, as being that of Trajan.<2> The exact position of Hythe lock is unknown.
