15th century house

DOE survey of No 197, Lexden Road. Grade II. Picturesque C16 house, opposite the churchyard. Two storeys and attics timber-framed and plastered, the roofs tiled, one gabled dormer, cross wings east and west. The upper storey projects on the south front of the west cross wing, the gable also projects. Central chimney stack with 4 octagonal shafts rebuilt. Some restoration and modern windows. Bargeboards to gable.<1>

This is church house, a 15th century hall house with cross wings. An upper floor was put into the hall in the 17th century and a stair with square newels and turned balusters was inserted behind the hall. A brick service wing was built at the back of the east end in the 19th century. A merchants mark found in the house was probably that of John Baldwin, tanner, who lived there in the mid 17th century.<2>
