Full Description

Mid 17th to late 18th century house on site of 16th/early 17th century building. To begin with it was probably a four roomed structure with lean-to on its east end. The house was probably constructed of timber-framing supported on stone plinths. Floors were of clay and there were a number of hearths present. The house had a passage or corridor on its south edge. This was either a lean -to or provided access for a second set of tenants to their part of the property. On the west side of the site the western plot boundary was marked by the line of a wall. It appears that the plot boundaries continued in use into the Victorian period. During the late 17th century, the house was subject to repairs and renewals to the clay floors. Two major structural changes also occurred including the creation of a drain and the excavation of two pits presumably for rubbish. The house continued in use until the late 18th century.<1>
