Full Description

The clay floor was sealed below L3, a buried soil horizon containing peg-tile (and therefore post-medieval), c.1.4m below modern ground level. The floor could be related to robber trench F3, which marked the position of a Roman wall. However, the report suggested the floor was likely to be of earlier date, because Roman townhouses of the 2nd or 3rd centuries, with mortared stone footings, more commonly had tessellated floors rather than clay floors. <1>
