Full Description

The building was subject to assessment in 2000 (LEC 11) and a programme of historic building recording was undertaken in 2007, prior to conversion.<1><2>

Riding schools were used to exercise and train the horses and personnel and were an essential component to a cavalry barracks. This one, in particular, is part of a near-complete complex, described as the most important one of its type on an English barracks (listed buildings online). It is situated just to the south-west of the north boundary wall, aligned NE to SW, within the Cavalry Barracks complex. Along with the rest of the group, the buildings are much plainer in style to those of the Royal Artillery Barracks to the north (MCC10146). The more ornate architectural finishings of the Royal Artillery buildings probably reflect their perceived high regimental status. The absence of an equivalent building at the Royal Artillery Barracks suggests this facility was shared between both barracks.<1>
