Full Description
Replacing the earlier demolished Roman structure in this site (MCC3026), this later building was some kind of large, high-status structure. The archaeological remains consist of four robbed-out foundations constructed on a NNW-SSE alignment, which seems to correspond with other Roman buildings recorded along North Station Road. Re-used tile found in the robber trenches is likely to be from the earlier building; like that structure, this later building also had a tiled roof, heating system and possibly painted walls.
The width (at least 2.2m) and depth (at least 1.2m) of one of the robber trenches suggests that it was to carry an exterior wall to a Roman public building of at least two storeys. Only a small amount of dateable Roman pottery was recovered but indicates a largely 2nd to 3rd century AD date.
This building was later itself demolished, perhaps in the 3rd or 4th century. The remains of the Roman road leading to the walled town from the north was not encountered during this excavation but would likely be uncovered if further investigations were to take place in the future.<1>
