Full Description

During excavation work, a tessellated pavement littered with oyster shells and occasional animals bones was uncovered. The pavement had been laid on a thin bed or mortar which in turn rested on a clayey deposit (depth unknown). Some tesserae had been dislodged in the past, leaving bare patches showing the underlying mortar base. There is some evidence to suggest the pavement may have been repaired at some point. This find is entirely in keeping with previous discoveries in this insula of the Roman town and is likely to be part of a Roman town house.

The floor was cut on the western side by a curving channel constructed using entirely reused Roman septaria and brick, which may have been a drain of some kind. The date of this feature could not be accurately established.<1>
