Full Description

Six areas of compacted gravel were recorded which may indicate a Roman road or trackway existed on the site, although interpretation is problematic due to the partial nature of the excavation. It was not established whether these areas were linked and therefore could be representative of a Roman road, which has not previously been recorded in this area of the town. Another possibility is that these areas could simply represent several separate gravelled areas.

If the trackway theory can be confirmed, it would seem to be aligned north-west to south-east and may possibly have linked up with a metalled droveway located 500m to the south-east of the High School site.<1>
