Full Description

In the centre of the trench, a spread of Roman tile and rubble was encountered around 200mm below the ground-level, which was made up of demolition debris sealing a circular robber trench 1.65m deep. A layer of crushed brick fragments, limestone and mortar in the upper fill of this trench may be the remains of a floor. The location of this feature has led to its interpretation as a mausoleum. Further supporting evidence is present in the form of two Roman wall lines seen in the sections of the trench which may have constituted part of a square enclosure around the mausoleum. <1>
