Full Description

Two definite and two probable Roman urned cremation burials were disturbed during the groundworks at Merly House in 2004 (the others are ELM1410, ELM1411 and ELM1413).

This possible cremation comprised fragments from the base of a Roman flagon, plus a lid, which were recorded in the west-facing section of one of the foundation trenches for the indoor swimming pool. The vessel appeared to have been previously disturbed, perhaps by gardening works. No cremated bone was recovered from the pot but it seems likely to have been part of a cremation burial. Other finds from the trench include pottery sherds and part of a Roman lamp, which may have been associated with the burial. <1>
