Full Description

Original high status Roman residence on the Victoria Inn site (see MCC2882) was demolished and replaced by one or probably two larger buildings which are likely to have had a public function.

One of these contained tessellated floors and both buildings would have had internal painted walls. One of these later Roman buildings may be part of a building found to the south at the Old Poultry Yard site. These later buildings are likely to have had a public rather than domestic function due to the size of their foundations. It is not clear if the structures from either period relate to the mosaic and Roman buildings found in previous centuries. It would appear that the buildings had been demolished by the 4th century.<1>
